Students begin by discussing how to be respectful when they talk
with people, either face to face or on the telephone. Students learn
some rules that can help them express themselves clearly and respectfully when they write email messages.
Students watch a video in which teens share their rules
for connecting with others online. They then learn strategies
for recognising and responding to risky online interaction
and rate online scenarios using the Internet Traffic Light.
Note: References to 'flirting' and 'sexual talk'.
Appropriate Commenting (Senior)
The student has...
received or given inappropriate comments or feedback.
Teacher Created Lesson
Students view inappropriate comments and discuss in groups.
Brainstorm what makes comments appropriate / inappropriate on social networks, forums and/or school commenting options. Students use what they have discussed to re-write comments.
Students discuss the nature of the Internet, and understand that while it is not a “real” physical place, it is made up of real people. They use a graphic representation to explain the different in-person connections they have with their family, friends, and community.
Online FRIENDS (Middle / Senior)
The students...
is accepting friend requests of people they do not know

Teacher created lesson
Students come up with criteria to use when using social networks using the acronym 'F.R.I.E.N.D'. They then present and display their criteria. Or students use criteria and system below to present.
Example: F = Family, R = Real Name, I = I know/have meet in person, E = Education/School, N = Near by, D = Duration of time/regular contact.
If you can tick off 4 or more of the above it's green. If you can tick off 3-4 of the above it means amber/orange. If you can only tick off 1-2 of the above it means red. Traffic light system: Green = GO, Amber/Orange = Think, Red = STOP!
This could be a class competition.
Who can we trust online? (Middle / Senior)
The student...
Is accepting friend requests or chatting to 'unknown' people online.
Teacher created Lesson.
The teacher signs up to a website in front of the class with a 'fake' account with the intention of 'shocking' the students. Elicit students responses. How does this make them feel? Can we trust everyone online? How do we know what or who is 'real'? When is it okay to accept friend requests or communicate with someone online?
